Cultural Relic Cluster
The
Liangzhu Cultural Relic Cluster represents an ancient civilization
around the Taihu Lake about 5,300-4,000 years ago. The main attractions
in this area are the Liangzhu Cultural Relic Museum and the Relic
Cluster.
The museum sits on the northwestern suburbs of Liangzhu Town,
Yuhang near No. 104 State Highway. The title of the Museum is written
by Jiang Zemin. Zhao Puchu, a great scholar and Buddhist master,
regarded it as the first sun ray of Chinese civilization.
Playing an important role in China's archaeological and historical
circles, the museum is a patriotic education base at the respective
levels of Yuhang, Hangzhou and Zhejiang. Since its opening in April
1994, the museum has allured lots of visitors including state leaders
such as Zhu Rongji and Jiang Chunyun, and scholars and professionals
both at home and abroad.
The relic cluster spreads in a large area of 34 square kilometers,
across Liangzhu Town, Anxi Town, and Pingyao Town under the jurisdiction
of Yuhang. The widespread cluster has more than 50 sites which contains
a rich knowledge of the past culture. The most important sites are
Tombs at Fan Hill, Altar at Yao Hill, and the earth Pyramid at Mojiao
Hill. A park by the name of Liangzhu Cultural Relics Park will soon
be built as the second phase of the Liangzhu Cultural Museum.
Near
Liangzhu Town is Dongming Hill under the jurisdiction of Anxi Town.
The region is turned into a forest park. The first phase of a gigantic
development project about the park has been finished and has come
into trial operation. The region is best known for its exuberance
of bamboo groves and its quiet natural wonders. The vegetation and
geographic conditions have turned the park area into a unique climatic
paradise where winter is warm and summer is cool. In the hottest
days, the thermometer readings here are 8℃ lower than in downtown
Hangzhou.
The resort at the Dongming provides
tourist facilities for recreational activities such as fishing,
game hunting, barbecuing, swimming, and camping. Inside the resort
is also a hotel with convenient facilities such as function rooms
and conference rooms. The Dongming resort is an ideal venue for
leisure and summer vacations.
Dongming Hill abounds with ancient relics.
In the mountains are the Dongming Buddhist Temple and the Qunxian
Taoist Temple where Emperor Jianwen of the Song Dynasty and a minister
of his once visited and stayed. The Dongming Temple has been destroyed
but the site remains. An osmanthus tree, presumably planted the
Emperor Jianwen, still stands alive. Some camellia, mulberry and
yulan trees likewise show their eternal yearning for longevity though
they have already lived for centuries.
The Dongming Temple
is planned to be restored. A flagging-stone path leading up to the
relic site on the peak has been paved and the construction of a
tea house is under way. More scenic spots in the hills are to be
rebuilt such as Qunxian Taoist Temple, General Meng's Hall, Viewing
Sunrise at Gold Peak, Dragon Eye Spring, Stone Tablet Pavilion.
Nearby are some other ancient relics such as Altar at Yao Hill,
tombs of personages in the Song Dynasty. In the Dongming Resort,
Kangmen Landscape Resort will be built around the Kangmen Reservoir,
including scenic spots such as Nine Caves, Fragrance Floating at
Stone Gate, and Reed and Flower River.
The South Hill stands near Pingyao Town,
northern neighbor of Liangzhu Town. On cliffs in the hill have stone
carvings in Yuan Dynasty. There used to be over 30 carvings in ancient
times, but only 13 remain today. Of the 13 stone carvings, 12 are
Buddhist statues and one is a Taoist statue, all with dates indicating
when they were made. These stone carvings look great in size and
magnificent in appearance. According to local experts, these statues
are good for study of ancient stone carving art and good for tourism.
