Hill Landscape Resort
Chao
Hill Landscape Resort, 29 kilometers northeast of downtown Hangzhou,
can be accessed by No. 09 province highway that links No. 104 and
302 State Highways. Positioned only 6 kilometers away from Tangxi
Town, a region of rice, fish and silk in Yuhang, the Chao Hill is
part of great Hangzhou's scenic resorts.
Occupying
an area of 5 square kilometers, the Hill spreads wide and far. The
highest peak stands at 260 meters above the sea level. The name
of the hill comes from the fact that the abrupt towering peak stands
alone in a broad area that is relatively flat.
Chao
Hill is famed for plum blossoms that are ancient, unique, and widespread
in a broad region. In February, the early spring breezes and sunshine
make plum trees burst into furious blossoms. White flowers can be
seen everywhere in a wide area longer than five kilometers. The
crystal white petals look like snowflakes floating down from heaven.
Also widely known as the 10-li Fragrant Snowy Sea, Chao Hill in
the plum
blossom season is one of the three most famed
resorts for plum blossoms viewing in regions south of Yangtze River
Delta. China is bequeathed with five ancient plum blossom tress
and Chao Hill has two of them. One was planted in the Tang dynasty
and the other in Song Dynasty.
Bright Hall (Daming Hall) is the centerpiece of Chao Hill resorts.
In front of the Bright Hall stands the Big Gate Tower, an imitation
structure of the original building near the Guangji Bridge at the
south end of the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal. Also in front of
the bright hall is a arched street, another imitation of the ancient
street in Tangxi Town, and a rural-styled four-season flower park.
Near the Bright hall are Song Dynasty Plum Flower Pavilion, Floating
Fragrance Pavilion, the tomb of Wu Changshuo, a great modern seal
engraver, calligrapher and founder of the Xiling Seal Society, and
his memorial.
The hill is also dotted with Miaoxi (Wonderful Happiness) Temple,
Yuxi (Jade Happiness) Temple. On the way to these two temples, you
can visit many other tourist attractions such as Chuiyun Pavilion,
Shuying Pavilion, Cloudy Rock Spring and Tiger Rock. On the top
of Chao Hill spreads a forest of stone formations. Some looks like
a tiger, some resembles a giant, some spreads like a green screen,
and some appears like a young bamboo shoot. These strangely shaped
stone formations touch off people's wild imagination.
Xingqiao (Star Bridge )Town is situated southeast of Chao Hill,
only 5 kilometers away from Linping, capital of Yuhang district. The
town had many Buddhist monasteries in the Five Dynasties Period
centuries ago.
One of the dozen temples was named Jing Hui, which could match Lingyin
Temple and Jingci Temple in Hangzhou in terms of structural scope
and magnificence. The temple is being under reconstruction. Within
the area under jurisdiction of Star Bridge Town are several hills
such as Yellow Crane Hill, Tongkou Hill and Buddhist Sun Hill, which
have been tourist attractions for ages.
These hills used to have many important relic sites such as the
cottage where Su Shi, a great scholar in Song Dynasty, studied,
the former residence of Wang Meng, a painter in the Yuan Dynasty,
the State Guest House for messengers from the northern states in
the South Song dynasty, Yellow Crane Pavilion, Stone Drum Lake,
Yellow Crane Cave, Dragon Hiding Spring, Seclusion Rock, Heavenly
Apparel Pagoda, Truth Grasping Pines, etc. The local government
has formulated a grand plan to restore some of these tourist attractions.
